Agatha H and the Clockwork Princess by Phil and Kaja Foglio

Sunday, May 13, 2012

Intrigue!
Subterfuge!
Circus Folk!
In a time when the Industrial Revolution has escalated into all-out warfare, mad science rules the world... with mixed success.
With the help of Krosp, Emperor of All Cats, Agatha has escaped from the massive airship known as Castle Wulfenbach. After crashing their escape dirigible, Agatha and Krosp fall in with Master Payne's Circus of Adventure, a traveling troupe of performers dedicated to staging Heterodyne shows—dramatizations of the exploits of Bill and Barry Heterodyne and their allies—who are unaware of Agatha's connection to the Heterodyne line.
Pursued by the ruthless Baron Klaus Wulfenbach, his handsome son Gil, and their minions (not to mention Othar Tryggvassen, Gentleman Adventurer), Agatha hides in plain sight among the circus folk, servicing their clanks and proving herself adept in performing the role of Lucrezia Mongfish, nemesis to—and later wife of—Bill Heterodyne. She also begins training under Zeetha, swordmistress and princess of the lost city of Skifander. Together, Agatha, Krosp, and the performers travel across the treacherous wasteland of war-torn Europa, towards Mechanicsburg, and the ancestral home of the Heterodynes—Castle Heterodyne.
But with many perils standing in her way—including Wulfenbach's crack troops, mysterious Geisterdamen, savage Jagermonsters, and the fabled Storm King—it's going to take more than a spark of Mad Science for Agatha to get through.

Grantville Gazette Volume 41 created by Eric Flint edited by Paula Goodlett

And . . . we're baaaccckkk!
Grantville Gazette, Volume 41 is ready!
This issue has a lot of real treats for our readers. Walt Boyes gives us "It's Just a Dog," about a real special sort of dog, much like Terry Howard's "German Puddles," also in this issue is about a real special sort of dog.
"Wings of Chance" by Kerryn Offord, however, isn't exactly about flying eagles. More about flying folks, actually . . .
Bradley H. Sinor and Susan P. Sinor bring us "All for One," their first co-written story for the Grantville Gazette. Gorg Huff and Paula Goodlett are back with "Fresno Construction," and, no, it's not set in California. Garrett W. Vance offers "Second Chance Bird, Episode Ten," the longest running serial we've published, and Rainer Prem is back with "Ein feste Burg, Episode Two," our newest serial. And Tim Roesch's nursing student is back in "Letters Home, 5."
Nonfiction this month is Iver P. Cooper's "Airship Propulsaion, Part One: Thrust and Drag," which has several more episodes coming in future issues. And Rainer Prem provided "Language Societies of the Seventeenth Century," a look at some of what people in the "back then" spent their time doing.
Our Time Spike offering is "The Swarm" by David W. Dove. Boy, those bugs will give you the shivers.
Really neat columns from Kristine Kathryn Rusch and Bud Webster this issue. Kristine is "So Fan-girl" in Notes from the Buffer Zone and Bud is discussing "Secret Crocodiles and Strange Doings (Or Sometimes the Magic Really Works), which discusses R. A. Lafferty.
Have fun!

Hank Reinhardt's Book of Knives - eARC

#3 in the Countdown modern-day military adventure series.
Welcome to the Philippines outback. It's a true garden spot, if you happen to like drug running, bush-bound revolutionary movements, Balkanized tribal warfare, illegal weapons trading, and kidnapping for fun and profit. It's hostage rescue time once again for Terry Welch's special operations company. But this is turning out to be one of those missions. Starting with no clue as to the hostage's whereabouts topped off by Welch and his crew having to endure a rifle company of hated competitors supposedly sent along for reinforcement.
Part of the territory for Welch. But then an attack on both companies' home bases leaves families and friends under threat of death and any available support scurrying to defend. Worse, advance team members sent to reconnoiter have been taken hostage as well. No help, no backup, team members in the soup.
Welch knows there's only one solution: do whatever it takes. This is H Hour. And the fight is on.

Free books Queen of Wands - eARC What Peple say about it

It is very rare for me to wax lyrical about a book. Hmm... I'm not sure this review would be described as such. ========== I've discussed the four so called fantasy books John wrote with him. He felt he'd used the wrong company, I thought the books were crap - well written, but meeting John's needs and no-one else's. I didn't think John could write fantasy. Then came Princess of Wands. There was a little too much use of other people's memes, but let face it, its not 1900 and of course all stories reflect prior usages. Reread several times, always with pleasure. ========= Like others, I've been eagerly awaiting the successor book with teeth grinding at the beat of the years passing by. ========= Then at last comes Queen of Wands. John's a tricky bugger, the clues in novella 1 led to expectations blown totally out of the water in novella two. Which gives no clues to novella 3. ========== The last paragraph was sort of expected, the last sentence so unexpected I think one of his gun toting mates may just blow him away. ========= I've read all of this year's eArcs. This beats all the others hands down ========= Compliments to the Chef. A most delicious meal. My eyes are (so briefly) satisfied. ... Now, what's Mike up to John, no time for a rest, your greedy readers know you must have had a weekend off by now. Get Back To work. ========= Congratulations {fireworks highlighting the sky} ========== I'm hopeless at identifying let alone solving puns. I identified 29 external references and about 20 others I couldn't solve but were obviously references. In the first book I thought you were sending up Dave Drake. In this book you appear to be sending up every famous person in history, and I hope at some date you will tell us who they all were. ========== Regards indeed for a job done far better than well. Ian Clark, Gladstone QLD, Australia. ========== Well, back to rereading When The Devil Dances.
